In a little over a year, the City of Atlanta Water Bureau created a comprehensive relational database of its entire water distribution network. Today, a complete inventory exists of all water mains, valves, hydrants, pumps, meters, and service connections, featuring total network connectivity and cross-indexing of all distribution and production facilities. This paper discusses how the Bureau implemented its Digital Equipment VAX 6410 Work Management System. Vendor selection, purchasing, data conversion, and integration with the Bureau's Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA), Customer Information System (CIS), and Geographic Information System (GIS), is also described.
