AN INTRODUCTION TO THE PRINCIPLES AND PRACTICE OF ABRASIVE FLOW MACHINING (AFM) IS PRESENTED. THE VARIOUS EXAMPLES, WHICH SHOW SUCCESSFUL APPLICATIONS OF AFM, HELP DEFINE WHEN ABRASIVE FLOW MACHINING IS USED. TODAY, MORE EMPHASIS IS BEING PLACED ON REPLACING MANUAL DEBURRING, EDGE CONTOURING, AND POLISHING WITH MECHANIZED, AUTOMATIC PROCESSES. THE ABILITY OF AFM TO REACH INTERNAL OR INACCESSIBLE AREAS, TO FOLLOW COMPLEX CONTOURS, AND TO SIMULTANEOUSLY WORK ON MULTIPLE EDGES OR SURFACES IN A WORKPIECE WILL RESULT IN CONTINUED DEVELOPMENT AND EXPANDED USE FOR THIS METHOD.
