This paper discusses a spreadsheet tool that was developed and utilized to conduct a general desktop mixing
evaluation of storage tanks. Physical and operational characteristics of distribution system
storage tanks were used as inputs to the spreadsheet to evaluate the mixing conditions. For this
analysis, the required physical characteristics of the tanks was obtained from as-built design
drawings and the operational characteristics were obtained from supervisory control and data
acquisition (SCADA) data. The results from the general evaluation performed with the
spreadsheet tool were used to help select the tanks that would undergo additional computational
fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling and water quality measurements (temperature profiles). These
additional more detailed evaluations were then used to verify the results of the spreadsheet
mixing evaluation tool. The general and detailed mixing evaluations can be used as the basis for
recommendation improvements or operation changes to improve mixing and water quality within
storage tanks. Includes 3 references, tables, figures.
