A NOVEL METAL MATRIX COMPOSITE TECHNOLOGY BEING DEVELOPED AT LANXIDE CORPORATION IS DISCUSSED. THE PROCESS INVOLVES WETTING OF THE REINFORCEMENT BY THE MATRIX ALLOY AND IS A COST-EFFECTIVE METHOD FOR PRODUCING METAL MATRIX COMPOSITE COMPONENTS. THIS PAPER PROVIDES AN OVERVIEW OF THE PROCESSING METHODS, A DESCRIPTION OF SOME OF THE COMPOSITES THAT HAVE BEEN MADE AND THEIR KEY PROPERTIES, AND EXAMPLES OF SOME OF THE APPLICATIONS BEING ADDRESSED WITH THESE MATERIALS.
