The use of in-line particle counters to monitor water quality is a relatively new and powerful technology in the drinking water industry. Because the calibration of these devices is very complex and generally difficult to practice in the field, calibration verification by the end user is now being requested. The calibration verification should confirm the performance of both new and in-use in-line particle counters. The objective of this research was to develop a simple calibration verification procedure for in-line particle counters that can be performed on counters without having to remove them from the sample site area. The procedure uses a defined standard and a simplified particle injection system. The standard is a combination particle count and size standard, with all values identified and traceable to NIST.
