An evaluation is presented for the energy consumption of four different pump and piping systems for a closed-loop ground-source heat pump (GSHP) system for a 72,000 ft2(6700 m2) school. One decentralized system with individual loops and circulator pumps for each zone and three central systems (variable speed drive pump, constant speed drive pump, and primary-secondary pump loop) were considered. The decentralized system used 13,100 kWh per year, the pump with the variable speed drive (VSD) consumed 18,800 kWh, the constant speed pump required 108,600 kWh, and the primary-secondary system used 65,500 kWh. Design details, building loads, pump control, operating characteristics, and tabular results are presented.Units: Dual
