Full-Scale Ultraviolet-Oxidation System for Removing Tetrachloroethylene From a Drinking Water Well Site in South Gate, California
This paper describes a pilot plant and full-scale demonstration of a proprietary system for using ultraviolet oxidation system on contaminated groundwater. The water was contaminated with tetrachloroethylene (PCE). The purpose of the plant was to reduce PCE to drinking water standards. The objective of the test program was to define operating, maintenance and equipment costs for full scale equipment. Based on successful pilot plant studies, design of the 1.3 MGPD system was initiated. Details are given on the successful pilot test (6 of 12 were successful). The design and construction are described in detail: preliminary design, final design, site preparation, installation of the system on the well site, and start up and shakedown. Although the system ran at 1150 GPM for only a few hours, it can be concluded that the system reduces the PCE concentration of 7 ppb to less than 1 ppb at a direct operations and maintenance cost of $0.07/1000 gal.
