Refrigerant vapor compression cycles are closed systems which limits the amount of regular preventative maintenance performed on the compressor. This fact creates a great significance on the selection for the compressors' lubricant to ensure reliability of the system. Also, the interaction between the refrigerant and lubricant can have a great impact on the longevity of the compressor. Additionally, refrigerant systems are under high pressures and temperatures so, bench top lubrication testing is difficult and many times inaccurate. This study aimed at developing new anti-wear additives to be mixed with the lubricant to extend compressor life as well as ensure its' compatibility with current and future refrigerants. To select the optimal lubricant/additive mixture a multitude of tests spanning many months was required. These tests included sealed tubes, bench top tribology, PVT, and compressor testing. The results found from this study; present a new multi-refrigerant compatible additive that offers a significant increase to the compressor’ and therefore the entire refrigeration systems' useful life.
