THIS PAPER PRESENTS A PRACTICAL SOLUTION TO A MATERIALS HANDLING PROBLEM FACED BY THE PACKAGING DEPARTMENT OF A MANUFACTURING COMPANY. AN INDUSTRIAL ROBOT WAS INTEGRATED WITH A LASER SCANNER AND CONTROLLED BY A COMPUTER-BASED PALLETIZATION ALGORITHM. THE BAR CODED BOXES ARRIVING AT THE PALLETIZATION STATION WERE DECODED, SORTED, AND PALLETIZED BY THE INDUSTRIAL ROBOT. THE RESULT WAS INCREASED PRODUCTIVITY FOR THE DEPARTMENT AND LESS EMPLOYEE EXPOSURE TO INJURIES.
