The American Water Works Company (AWWC) investigated drinking water violations information contained in the US Environmental Protection Agency's (USEPA) Safe Drinking Water Information System (SDWIS) database and found many discrepancies between company records, the states' records, and the federal SDWIS database. The majority of the monitoring and reporting violations shown in SDWIS for AWWC systems were found to be erroneous. There are varied reasons for the errors and discrepancies in SDWIS depending on the state data system and the type of water system. In order to correct current errors, prevent future errors, and provide useful information to the public, water utilities, states, and USEPA will need to change the way they now collect, manage, and display drinking water compliance information.
