THIS PAPER INTRODUCES A METHODOLOGY FOR PART IDENTIFICATION AND QUALITY CONTROL OF INDUSTRIAL PARTS (IN AUTOMATED ASSEMBLY LINES). THE BASIC IDEA IS THAT A VISION SYSTEM EFFECTIVELY UTILIZES THE KNOWLEDGE IT POSSESSES ABOUT THE VARIOUS INDUSTRIAL OBJECTS. THIS BRINGS ABOUT A FASTER SOLUTION TO THE PART IDENTIFICATION AND INSPECTION PROBLEM. THUS PART IDENTIFICATION (THROUGH FEATURE EXTRACTION) IS CONSIDERABLY SIMPLIFIED. A PC ENVIRONMENT MAKES IT INEXPENSIVE AND FLEXIBLE.
