A CONCURRENT ENGINEERING METHOD FOR THE DESIGN OF ROBUST MANUFACTURING SYSTEMS IS DESCRIBED. THE METHOD IS MOTIVATED BY THE STRATEGIES AND CONCEPTS USED BY GENICHI TAGUCHI FOR THE DESIGN OF ROBUST PRODUCTS. THE METHOD DEVELOPED USES A MULTIPLE CRITERIA OPTIMIZATION FORMULATION TO MODEL THE DESIGN PROBLEM. AN ADAPTATION OF THE PROCESS OPTIMIZATION TECHNIQUE, RSM, IS USED TO GUIDE THE SEARCH TOWARD IMPROVED DESIGNS. THE APPLICATION OF THE PROPOSED METHOD IS DEMONSTRATED ON AN EXAMPLE FROM THE MANUFACTURING JOB SHOP DOMAIN. SEVERAL AVENUES WITH POTENTIAL FOR FURTHER RESEARCH ARE IDENTIFIED.
