Encouraging Sustainability: Use of the U.S. Green Building Council LEED Certification Program to Enhance Focus on Sustainability
鼓励可持续性:利用美国绿色建筑委员会LEED认证计划加强对可持续性的关注
This powerpoint presentation begins by providing a brief overview of sustainability and the water industry. Leadership in Energy and Environmental
Design (LEED) is presented, along with an example of bringing sustainability into focus at American Water. Lessons learned from LEED include:
design-build project delivery
method is well suited to LEED;
no significant additional capital
cost at lower levels of LEED
certification;
employees enthusiastic,
communities positive; and,
established, structured program
helpful,
recognition of LEED "brand"; process "discovered" good
existing practices, new approach
stretched team to implement
others; and,
practices broadly applicable to all
construction. Lessons learned about sustainability include: planning in a wider context and with a
long view;
minimizing environmental impact;
efficient management of water resources such as
source water protection, treatment and delivery, conservation, reuse;
maintenance and upkeep of
infrastructure to maximize efficiency of
assets and limited capital; financial viability - full-cost pricing of
water, rates that will sustain
operations and support necessary
investment in infrastructure;
development and retention of
qualified, motivated staff;
climate change - prepare for drought
and flood, manage risks; and,
communication with customers and
stakeholders about water issues.
