Updating Heat and Moisture Production Rates of Poultry and Poultry Housing Systems
Heat and moisture production rates (HP and MP) from animals and their facilities are the basis for design and operation of the environmental control (heating, cooling, and ventilation) systems. Their genetics, nutrition, production stage, and the environment affect HP and MP from the animals. The current literature data are based on 20- to 40-year old genetics and nutrition. While it used to take more than 10 weeks to grow 1.8-kg (4 lb.) broilers, now it takes less than six weeks. The faster growth also represents an increased metabolic activity. The current literature data fall far short in reflecting the current industrial norms of housing and management practices. The objectives of this research project are: 1) Develop a comprehensive review of literature on heat and moisture production rates of poultry. 2) Develop a lab-scale measurement and carry out measurements in the laboratory. 3) Same as above for Field Tests. 4) Compare the new data with those obtained from Objective 1.
