In this paper, a procedure has been outlined that is able to predict the performance of powdered activated carbon for removal of trace organic compounds from natural waters. Only simple laboratory experiments and some computer modeling are required to determine the feasibility of PAC treatment. Special emphasis was given to effectively describe adsorption equilibria of trace organic compounds in natural waters, and a search routine was developed to model the competitive effect of background organic matter.
