Globally, exterior painted plastic is either painted at 80C or 120C for parts with similar applications and requirements. Two component technologies can offer good performance with a wide cure processing window. Performance benefits in durability and etch resistance can be significant when compared to their one component counterparts. The automotive requirements to improve performance of the exterior plastic trim components have heightened the interest in two component formulations. This paper will discuss some of the benefits associated with polyurethane coatings. Processing polyurethane coatings requires several key design elements. A general discussion of these elements and comparative cost analysis between coating types will be shared.
