This research program was somewhat more comprehensive than the field survey work of RP 86. It was designed to measure the effectiveness of various air conditioning systems in removing pollutants from an occupied office area, occupancy of which was under full control. In the case of gaseous pollutants, the levels of these were controlled, thereby making it possible to establish significant "outdoor" levels for periods long enough to make meaningful testing of the removal equipment. The goal of the work was to determine what equipment is available that should or could be used in enclosed spaces when known pollutants are in the incoming air stream.
