ADHESIVES ARE FINDING INCREASED USE IN STRUCTURAL APPLICATION, PARTICULARLY AS REPLACEMENTS FOR MECHANICAL FASTENERS. EPOXIES HAVE TRADITIONALLY BEEN THE ADHESIVE OF CHOICE. HOWEVER, POLYURETHANE ADHESIVES, BECAUSE OF THEIR PROPERTIES--FLEXIBILITY, LOW-TEMPERATURE PERFORMANCE, ADHESION TO MANY SUBSTRATES, ETC.--ARE BEING USED IN AN INCREASING NUMBER OF APPLICATIONS. IN THIS STUDY, AN EXTENSIVE INDUSTRY SURVEY WAS PERFORMED TO IDENTIFY HIGH-PERFORMANCE, TWO-COMPONENT, STRUCTURAL POLYURETHANE ADHESIVE SYSTEMS FOR BONDING MATERIALS COMMONLY USED IN THE AUTOMOTIVE AND AEROSPACE INDUSTRIES. SUBSEQUENTLY, THE PERFORMANCE OF SELECTED ADHESIVE SYSTEMS WAS EVALUATED USING ALUMINUM, STEEL, POLYESTER-FIBERGLASS, GRAPHITE-EPOXY, AND GRAPHITE-PEEK AS THE ADHERENTS.
