The objective of this American Water Works Association Research Foundation (AWWARF) funded research was to investigate the effects of grounding electrical systems to metallic water services in terms of the shock hazard for utility employees and reduced service life of the distribution pipe main due to possible external corrosion caused by the current flow. Effects on water quality (internal corrosion) were also investigated. The program involved the participation of twenty water utilities geographically dispersed across the United States. This paper presents an overview of the project and the results of a utility survey which was conducted as part of the project.
