This paper explains how the current standardization efforts in the coding and classifying of CNC machines and their capabilities are used as the basis of a client/server application for managing and maintaining up-to-date information on machining tools in a manufacturing facility. The system described in this paper can be seen as a good example of how standardization efforts (in the area of factory resource representation) and rapidly increasing computation and communication capabilities are changing the scope, architecture and span of typical manufacturing applications software.
