Water utilities should be prepared to cope with the remote possibility of an accidental atmospheric release of radioactive materials from nuclear power plants or accidental spills of radioactive liquids from other sources. The potential hazards to health are described and quantified. Remedial actions are suggested and water suppliers are urged to rehearse responses to potential radioactive contamination of water supplies. Responsibilities for notification of an accident, water source monitoring, evaluation, and ordering, directing, and implementing protective actions to minimize customer exposure to the radiation should be delineated.
