Periodic high turbidity events in the three reservoirs servicing The Greater Vancouver Water District (GVWD), an aggressive low pH finished water, and concern regarding the potential for Giardia has caused the District to proceed with a Water Quality Improvement Plan (WQIP) to 1) improve the disinfection process, 2) implement corrosion control facilities, and 3) implement a multi-barrier treatment concept for Giardia control. The scope of the District's improvement plan is substantial. Water demands, source water quality, water quality concerns, waterborne diseases, bacterial regrowth, high turbidity, pipeline corrosion, the three phases of the management plan, corrosion control alternatives, disinfection practices, and treatment processes are detailed.
