Cool storage systems have been applied to commercial buildings since the 1970s. During this period, terminology for the sizing and control of cool storage systems was developed out of a necessity to communicate among the practicing engineers, manufacturers, building owners, building operators, and contractors. Unfortunately, there has been significant confusion between the various parties due to a blurring of the terminology that focused on the sizing of the system, but was then used by others to describe the control of the system. To overcome the problems with current terminology, ASHRAE initiated this project to include the following:Document the previously used terminology and its limitations.Develop a new terminology framework for accurately describing and characterizing cool storage operation and control strategies.Validate the framework through its use on several example systems.Develop and illustrate guidelines for the selection and application of a cool storage control system.
