In the automatic meter reading systems, keys to successful widespread implementation are easy access to, and control of, a reliable communications media, and an acceptable payback of the utility's investment. In addition, evolution from present reading and data management systems, with a minimum of disruption and change in strategic direction, must be possible. Radio systems, as described in this paper, meet these criteria for success. All data communication is under the direct control of the utility. Successful financial justification is assured, based upon the proven economics of hundreds of installed touch reading systems. Although radio reading adds an incremental cost (for the MXU and VXU), it brings with it a concurrent reduction in operating expense and opens the door to further improvements in customer service and resource management functions.
