A RAILROAD FREIGHT CAR BUILDER USED WELDING TRAINING AS A KEY ELEMENT IN ITS EFFORTS TO IMPROVE QUALITY. THE TRAINING PROCESS USED SEVERAL COMPLEMENTARY ELEMENTS: ESTABLISHMENT OF CLEAR QUALITY STANDARDS, DEFINITION OF WELDER QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS, TRAINING OF SUPERVISION AND MANAGEMENT TO SUPPORT AND TO ENHANCE THE WELD QUALITY EFFORTS, ESTABLISHMENT OF A WELDING SCHOOL FOR DETAILED TRAINING AND TESTING, AND SELECTION AND TRAINING OF WELDER TRAINERS. THE DETAILED PLANNING AND COMMITMENT BY MANAGEMENT MADE THE TRAINING PROCESS SUCCESSFUL. IT PROVIDED THE FRAMEWORK FOR ALL DEPARTMENTS TO PARTICIPATE IN AND CONTRIBUTE TO THE EFFORTS TO IMPROVE WELD QUALITY AT THREE PLANTS.
