In recent years, concern has grown over the types of disinfection byproducts(DBPs) that can potentially form in drinking water. Several classes of compoundsthat have been detected include haloacetic acids, haloketones, halonitriles,halomethanes, and haloalcohols. Currently, analytical methods do not exist forthe analysis of many of these DBPs. Recently, Environmental Health Laboratoriesof South Bend, Indiana, developed a method for the determination of several DBPsin a single analysis using gas chromatography (GC)/mass spectrometry (MS) coupledwith an electron capture detector (ECD). A splitter placed at the end of acapillary column diverts the effluent simultaneously into the two detectorsallowing for rapid method development by providing positive identification forthe DBPs. Large volume injection can be used for some of the analytes presentedin this paper. Data for this method are presented in terms of method detectionlimits, precision studies, and calibration.
