This paper describes events leading to the development of WIMS, a PC based database system for water distribution inventory maintenance management. WIMS provides the following functions: inventory, preventive maintenance scheduling, work order management, maintenance history, and reporting/administrative functions. The paper goes on to discuss general purpose additions such as CAD graphics integration and use of WIMS to prepare reports and documentation. Taken together, the functions render a system that delivers a substantial part of the function of an automated mapping/facilities management system on a much more modest scale, using familiar technology, at a reasonable cost. Issues relating to the use of WIMS data in operational analysis and capacity analysis are also provided, with detailed descriptions of techniques for preparing system models, allocation of demand and evaluation of results.
