THIS PAPER DESCRIBES A PATENTED METHOD FOR EFFECTIVELY AND EFFICIENTLY UTILIZING INFORMATION CONTAINED IN A GRAY SCALE HISTOGRAM, ACQUIRED BY A MACHINE VISION SYSTEM. SELECTED FEATURES OF THE HISTOGRAM ARE ADDRESSED IN VARIOUS LOOK-UP TABLES TO FORM WORK PARTS WHICH ARE THEN CONCATENATED TO FORM A WORD. EACH WORD REPRESENTS A UNIQUE SIGNATURE OF AN OBJECT OF INTEREST IN THE FIELD OF VIEW. SIGNATURES ARE NONREDUNDANTLY WRITTEN TO ONE OR MORE LIBRARIES FOR A FINAL PRESENCE OR ABSENCE CHECK IN A SORTING OR CLASSIFICATION SCHEME.
