This paper presents an innovative system that is able to measure how uniform is the interaction between the grinding wheel and the workpiece (or dressing tool) during a grinding operation or dressing. The measurement is performed by a signal processing system based on acoustic emission signals. The system processes high speed RMS levels of high frequency AE signals. The software maps the RMS values around the grinding wheel surface and shows a 3D diagram. The diagram maps on-line with a color scale the interaction level between wheel and workpiece along the time. Several output parameters extracted from the diagram allow the machine operator or an automatic monitoring system to control the wear process around the grinding wheel for correction. The main system applications are in high speed CBN grinding where the uniform usage of the wheel perimeter is an important issue.
