This powerpoint presentation begins by presenting a brief overview of emerging disinfection byproducts (DBPs) of concern, and factors affecting the
formation of regulated DBPs. The formation of emerging
halogenated DBPs,
organic-nitrogen precursors, is presented along with the formation of
Halonitromethanes, the formation of emerging
non-halogenated DBPs,
nitrosamines, occurrence vs toxicity -
cytoxicity and genotoxicity
database from Plewa and
colleagues. Presentation summary and conclusions indicate the following:
a wide range of DBPs in water
includes N-DBPs of health concern;
impacted by type of precursors
- NOM, AOM, EfOM,
bromide, nitrite, and
certain polymers;
impacted by disinfection scenario
- Cl2, NH2Cl, ClO2, and/or O3; need to balance control of regulated
DBPs with that of emerging DBPs
- some emerging DBPs higher toxicity,
however, need to consider both
occurrence and toxicity. Includes table, figures.
