该标准规定了测定包括含有添加剂的润滑油在内的石油产品及浓缩添加剂中总硫的3个步骤。该标准适用于177℃以上沸点的试样及含0.06%（m/m）以上硫分的试样。在3个步骤中，有2个步骤是使用碘酸盐（Iodate）检测方法，其中第一个步骤是使用诱导燃烧炉（inductionburnace）进行热解，第二个步骤是使用电阻燃烧炉（电阻炉）。第三个步骤是在电阻燃烧炉内热解后使用IR检测器。

이 표준은 첨가제들이 함유된 윤활유를 포함한 석유제품 및 농축 첨가제 중의 전체 황분을 측정하는 3가지 절차에 대하여 규정한다. 이 표준은 177 ℃ 이상의 끓는점을 가진 시료 및0.06 %(m/m) 이상의 황분을 함유하고 있는 시료들에 적용한다. 3가지 절차 중 2가지 절차는 요오드산염(Iodate) 검출 방법을 사용하는 것으로, 그 중 첫 번째는 열분해를 위하여 유도 연소로(inductionfurnace)를 사용하는 것이고, 두 번째는 저항 연소로(resistance furnace)를 사용하는 것이다. 세 번째절차는 저항 연소로 내의 열분해 후 IR 검출기를 사용하는 것이다.
