Devices that provide a partial flush or a full flush of a water closet, at the discretion and need of a user, provides an additional technique to water conservation programs that reduces water closet consumption. Removal of liquid and/or tissue wastes from the bowl with reduced water volumes in existing installed water closes has been shown to be feasible. Also, the potential exists for installation of partial flush volume control devices on low flush volume 6 liter water closets, as original equipment, to discharge light waste liquid and tissues loads that can introduce even greater water savings with new water saving fixtures. For the purposes of this discussion and following the development of a Dual Flush standard, ASME/ANSI A112.19.10, the selective mechanisms denoted as dual flush devices are defined for providing either reduced or usual volume discharges by selective actuation by the user without further involvement. Laboratory test measurements from a research program and development of the news standard for dual flush devices are discussed.
