THE PAPER TRACES THE DEVELOPMENT OF COMPUTERIZED PRODUCTION MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS, FROM MRP SYSTEMS THROUGH THE HYBRID APPROACH OF MRPII WITH ADD-ON FINITE CAPACITY SCHEDULERS. IT ALSO INTRODUCES A THIRD GENERATION OF PRIORITY-DRIVEN, INTEGRATED PRODUCTION MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS (IMP). THE METHODOLOGY OF IPM INCORPORATES A NOVEL APPROACH TO INVENTORY CONTROL, PLANT MODELLING AND PRODUCTION PLANNING. THE PAPER ELABORATES ON THE NEED FOR THE NEW TECHNOLOGY, IN LIGHT OF THE SHORTCOMINGS OF ITS PREDECESSORS, AND EXAMINES THE REPERCUSSIONS OF IPM TECHNOLOGY UPON PRODUCTION MANAGEMENT.
