A COLOR DIFFERENCE METER HAS BEEN DEVELOPED AND APPLIED IN METAL DECORATING. THE SYSTEM MEASURES TRI- STIMULUS COLOR IN A SEQUENTIAL MANNER UP TO 200 SPOTS IN THE PRINTED IMAGE. THIS CAN BE DONE FOR FULL-TONES, HALF-TONES, OR WHERE INKS OVERLAP. THE MEASUREMENTS ARE INDEPENDENT OF PRESS-SPEED AND ARE PRESENTED TO THE PRESS OPERATOR IN EASILY UNDERSTANDABLE COLOR GRAPHICS. A CIELAB-LIKE COLOR SPACE IS USED. THIS MEANS THAT THE PRESS OPERATOR IS ALERTED IF, AND ONLY IF, COLOR DEVIATIONS ARE BECOMING VISIBLE TO THE HUMAN EYE.
