The US Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) is developing a rule covering disinfection of groundwater supplies and disinfection by-products (DBPs). The rule is expected to force major changes in disinfection treatment practices. This article describes the critical elements of the rule as well as the work of an AWWA Technical Advisory Workgroup (TAW) assigned to address elements of the forthcoming rule. The role of the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California in managing the TAW is described, along with the various tasks being undertaken by the TAW. Also discussed are results of recent surveys and research projects investigating water utility actions to anticipate the rule. Includes 21 references, table, figures.
