Could the Skyhydrant Potable Membrane System Be a Real Solution for the MDGs? Affordable and Sustainable Community Water Supply for Developing Nations
天栓饮用膜系统能真正解决千年发展目标吗?发展中国家负担得起的可持续社区供水
This paper is about fast tracking product innovation, global networks, mobilizing an army
of volunteers, and corporate willingness to contribute to those in need. The outcome of
the Asian tsunami response to provide low cost potable water has resulted in a unique
solution to showcase low cost community water. Membrane systems have traditionally
not been considered affordable or sustainable for emerging communities. With recent
United Nations millennium development goal (MDG) initiatives in place to accelerate
access to pure affordable water, the results of over 250 Skyhydrant installations
worldwide have challenged conventional cost and delivery assumptions.
The proposition is that high quality affordable water, which utilizes membrane
technology solutions, should be seriously considered by major health and humanitarian
agencies. There is no magic bullet, but a critical assessment of UN benchmark
sustainability criteria as well as real treatment costs of less than 50 cents per person per
annum, make further evaluation compelling. Includes table, figures.
