This powerpoint presentation begins by providing a brief overview of the statement of problem that included: more than 90% of roughly 55,000 CWSs
serve fewer than 10,000 people; and,
the treatment for these systems is
becoming more complex, resulting in
residuals that are difficult to handle. The strategy of residuals management includes the following:
what are the contaminants of concern;
how can these contaminants be removed;
what type and quantity of residual is
produced for each system; and,
how can this residual be disposed of? Project challenge was to provide design and maintenance
information in a format that will be useful
to small system operators, and to encourage the choice of treatment
based on the residual produced. Radionuclide residuals treatment processes are listed, along with U.S. Environmental Protection Agency disposal options, arsenic residuals, ion exchange/adsorption, and minimizing backwash volume. Includes tables, figures.
