The Northeast quadrant of Cincinnati has experienced tremendous residential, commercial and industrial development since 1975. The growth area is within Cincinnati Water Works' (CWW's) Brecon Service Level, which was supported by the 1 MG elevated Brecon Tank. Computer models indicated that a second elevated tank, ground storage, and a large booster pumping station were required to satisfy future demands. Because the Brecon Service Area is over 20 miles from CWW's water source and treatment facilities, water quality degradation due to travel time and storage time in the tank was key to all siting, sizing, and design decisions. The siting strategy was developed to ensure water circulation through the Brecon Service Area even under minimum flow conditions. Both the Cornell Complex and the Blue Ash Tank are provided with separate inlet/outlet pipes, preventing a flow pattern resulting in stagnant water at various levels. Also, piping arrangements and valving were designed to allow one of the smaller pumps to be used in the winter to recirculate the tank contents if the tank and pumping station were not needed for demands in the area. Sample taps were added at various tank levels and location to allow for more accurate and complete monitoring.
