THE MANUFACTURING OF RIM BUMPER COVERS HAS EVOLVED THROUGH CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT. INTERNAL MOLD RELEASE RIM SYSTEMS, THE USE OF FILLERS FOR IMPROVED PROPERTIES, AUTOMATED HIGH-QUALITY PAINTING ARE USED TO MANUFACTURE THE HIGHEST-QUALITY, LOWEST-COST PRODUCT. SPC AND DESIGNED EXPERIMENTS ARE USED IN DAY-TO-DAY MANUFACTURING AND NEW PROCESS EVALUATIONS. STRUCTURAL RIM BEAMS HAVE BEEN DEVELOPED WITH THE DIRECTED FIBER GLASS PREFORM PROCESS. THESE CONCEPTS HAVE BEEN COMBINED TO DESIGN AND BUILD A MODULAR INTEGRATED FRONT END (MIFE), CONSISTING OF A FULL RIM FASCIA, DAVISORB URETHANE FOAM ENERGY ABSORBER AND A STRUCTURAL RIM BEAM/SUPPORT. THIS PAPER DESCRIBES EACH OF THESE CHANGES AND DISCUSSES POLYUREA BODY PANELS AND OTHER LOW-COST RIM FASCIA OPTIONS FOR FUTURE DESIGN AND MANUFACTURE.
