The objectives of this study were to: improve granular media filtration using engineered ceramic media;
evaluate operational robustness and dependency on chemical coagulation;
establish a baseline from which to continue further mechanistic studies; and,
evaluate microspheres as surrogates for Cryptosporidium. Cryptosporidium and the role of filtration is outlined, along with Performance Demonstration Experimental Set-Up, research platforms, pilot plant configuration, experimental conditions for synthetic water experiments, and Lake Ontario water experimental conditions and mechanistic experiments. Preliminary conclusions and further testing are listed. Includes tables, figures.
