This paper describes an integrated action plan which is being introduced by a large water utility in the United Kingdom to reduce the risks arising from possible cryptosporidium contamination of raw water. It is based on the practical experiences of a multidisciplinary and coordinated approach involving a wide range of measures. These include: development of improved analytical methodology, watershed risk assessment including monitoring programs, watershed risk management, provision of optimized water treatment barriers, development of improved operator training packages, and introduction of a comprehensive incident management plan in collaboration with health officials.
