NONTRADITIONAL MACHINING PROCESSES OFFER CREATIVE SOLUTIONS FOR PROBLEMS ASSOCIATED WITH THE MANUFACTURE AND REWORK OF FORGING DIES. ELECTROCHEMICAL MACHINING CAN BE USED TO PRODUCE THE DIE CAVITIES IN PRODUCTION APPLICATIONS. IT IS PARTICULARLY USEFUL FOR MACHINING COMPLEX CONFIGURATIONS IN DIFFICULT-TO-MACHINE MATERIALS. ECM BOASTS HIGH MATERIAL REMOVAL RATES AND EXCELLENT, STRESS-FREE SURFACES. THE ORBITAL ABRASION PROCESS, USED TO FORM LARGE EDM (ELECTRICAL DISCHARGE MACHINING) ELECTRODES, PRESENTS A NEW PROCEDURE FOR THE USE OF EDM IN THE FORGING INDUSTRY. ELECTRODES CAN AUTOMATICALLY BE FORMED AND REDRESSED TO MAXIMIZE THE EDM OUTPUT. WHEN PROPERLY EMPLOYED, THESE TECHNIQUES PRESENT NEW STRATEGIES FOR THE EFFICIENT PRODUCTION OF FORGING DIES IN TODAY'S MANUFACTURING OPERATIONS.
