WITH WIDE APPLICATION OF CAD/CAM/CAE SYSTEMS IN THE DESIGN AND MANUFACTURING OF SHEET METAL DIES, THE TRADITIONAL WAY OF SELECTING AND PROCURING STANDARD PARTS THROUGH CATALOGUES AND MANUALLY CREATED ORDER SHEETS NEEDS TO BE CHANGED. THIS PAPER PRESENTS THE STRUCTURE AND REQUIREMENTS OF DEVELOPING AN OODB WHICH FORMS THE KERNEL OF A SYSTEM ALLOWING UPGRADING AND ON-LINE RETRIEVAL OF STANDARD PARTS INFORMATION. IT ALSO FACILITATES ELECTRONIC PROCUREMENT OF THE PARTS. THE APPLICATION OF STEP AND ITS METHODOLOGY IS ALSO DISCUSSED.
