Due to high levels of pesticides and microorganisms in Lake IJssel water, the N.V. PWN Water Supply Company North Holland (PWN) of Velserbroek, The Netherlands, is forced to implement multiple barriers at two surface water treatment plants. After thorough research, a split treatment approach was adopted for both plants based on ultrafiltration/reverse osmosis (UF/RO) and ultraviolet irradiation/hydrogen peroxide (UV/H2O2). This paper presents the highlights of both the UF/RO and UV/H2O2 research for both plants. Includes tables, figures.
