AUTOMATION FOR THE HANDLING AND INSERTION OF O-RING SEALS DURING ASSEMBLY IS OFTEN AN UNRELIABLE PROCESS. TO FACILITATE AUTOMATED O-RING FEEDING AND INSTALLATION, A BOWL FEEDER AND A PNEUMATIC INSERTION DEVICE WERE DESIGNED TO WORK ALONG WITH A ROBOT IN GENERAL MOTORS' SAGINAW VANGUARD PLANT. THIS PARTICULAR MANUFACTURING CELL WILL INSTALL AN O-RING ONTO A CV JOINT HOUSING. THE ENTIRE OPERATION OF THE CELL IS DESCRIBED. DENEB, A ROBOT WORK CELL SIMULATION TOOL, VERIFIED CLEARANCES, REACHES, AND CYCLE TIME. A DOUBLE-TOOLED END EFFECTOR MEETS CYCLE TIME REQUIREMENTS, RECOMMENDATIONS PRIMARILY IN THE AREA OF DESIGN FOR MANUFACTURE ARE MADE FOR FUTURE PROJECTS. THE CELL ACHIEVES A SIMULATION CYCLE TIME OF 36 SECONDS WHICH IS WITHIN THE FACTORY CYCLE TIME.
