The objectives of this powerpoint presentation include the following:
examine rejections of nitrosamines and their precursors by nanofiltration (NF) and
brackish water reverse osmosis (BWRO) membranes; assess the effects of operating parameters on nitrosamine rejections; and, quantitatively analyze the transport parameters of nitrosamines. Experimental procedures are presented, along with nitrosamine filtration, modeling of nitrosamine filtration results, and nitrosamine precursor filtration. Presentation conclusions indicate that:
NF membranes
showed relatively low rejections (9-75%) and
would not be a viable option, especially for low MW nitrosamines;
BWRO membranes
showed much higher rejections (54-97%) and
additional treatment steps would be required for low MW nitrosamines;
rejection mechanism showed that
rejections of nitrosamines (uncharged compounds) dominantly
governed by size exclusion,
relatively low rejections of low MW nitrosamines are primarily due to
effective diffusion through BWRO membranes, and transport of nitrosamines through BWRO membranes found to be
proportional to aqueous diffusivity. Includes 8 references, tables, figures.
