The collapse-pulsing condition has not yet been determined for filter beds such as anthracite coal, dual media, and granular activated carbon. One objective of this study is to determine the air and water flow rates corresponding to the collapse-pulsing pattern for these various filter beds and compare the results with the condensed form of the theoretical collapse-pulsing equation. Another objective is to develop a quantitative method to supplement the observational collapse- pulsing data and gain additional information on the phenomena. Finally, the data gained from these two methods of measurement will be compared with available cleaning data to determine if the collapse-pulsing pattern results in the cleanest filter bed.
