This paper presents an overview of the treatment technologies available to remove radon from drinking water supplies and a discussion of issues involved in implementing these technologies. The work discussed in this paper is being developed as part of a research project sponsored by the AWWA Research Foundation entitled "Critical Assessment of Radon Removal Systems for Drinking Water Supplies." The primary purposes of this project are to develop a practical guide for water utilities to use for evaluating and selecting the best site-specific radon treatment technologies; and to pilot test the feasibility of a promising innovative radon removal technology. The project report will present the state-of-the-art for existing and emerging radon removal technologies.
