The demand for drinking water is expected to rise slightly in Limburg over the next few years. N.V. Waterleiding Maatschappij Limburg (WML) plans to meet that demand by offering a reliable and constant supply of drinking water by using surface water to prepare drinking water, a method as yet untried in Limburg, WML will be able to reduce the groundwater it pumps from now until the year 2000 by 30% as required by both the national and provincial authorities. This paper describes the project created to acheive this goal, called "Switch". The water treatment facility in Heel, WML's biggest surface water project, is described and how it relates to such aspects as: environmental impacts; ecology and nature; recreation; and, architecture. A description of project organization and the timetable are given.
