On-line solid phase extraction (SPE) was coupled to liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry (LC/MS/MS) to detect 19 compounds from a diverse group of pharmaceuticals, pesticides, personal care products and steroids at a concentration as low as ng L-1 in drinking and surface waters was studied. All results displayed a good degree of reproducibility, with relative standard deviations (RSD) of less than 12 % for all compounds. Matrix effects were observed for some compounds without exceeding more than 25%. Method detection limits were in the range of 2 to 25 ng L-1 except for estriol with a value of 50 ng L-1. The recoveries varied from 87 to 110 % in surface waters. The analysis of various water samples with the detection and quantification of some of the selected compounds were also reported. This method was preferred over traditional offline procedures since it can minimize tedious sample preparation and increases productivity. Includes 12 references, tables, figures.
